Hazel Grace Lancaster  Hazel is a 16 year old girl who is living with thyroid cancer. She likes to stay at home and read in her room. She always ends up rereading her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. Her mom forces her to go to Support Group where she soon meets Augustus. From the moment she spots Augustus she is instantly attracted to him, but she is scared to become close to anyone, even her parents. Hazel believes she is like a grenade, and when she dies it will hurt the people she loves. Later in the book she gains confidence and becomes close to others, especially Augustus.
Issac  Issac is friends with Augustus. He met Hazel at Support Group. Issac like many others in the book suffers from cancer. He has cancer in his eyes, and is forced to have a surgery which causes him to go blind. Mrs. Lancaster  Mrs. Lancaster is Hazel's overprotective but loving mom. She is caring and only wants what is best for Hazel. Mrs. Lancaster tries to make Hazel's life as bright as it can be. Later in the story she explains that she is going to school to become a social worker. | Augustus Waters  Augustus is a 17 year old boy. He has lost his right leg due to cancer and is forced to use a prosthetic. Augustus has been cancer free for years, yet he still goes to Support Group with his friend Issac. From the moment he lays eyes on Hazel he is in love. Throughout the book he does everything in his power to keep her happy. Augustus is a very charismatic, charming, and funny character. He is soon re-diagnosed with osteosarcoma, and sadly dies a few weeks later. Peter Van Houten  Peter Van Houten is the author of An Imperial Affliction. He is also an alcoholic. Houten is very rude to Hazel and Augustus when they visit him to talk about his book. Later we learn that Hazel reminded him of his daughter who died of cancer when she was 6 years old. Lidewij  Lidewij is Peter Van Houten's assistant. She is the one who sets up the trip to Amsterdam for Hazel and Augustus. Lidewji is appauled by the awful things that Peter tells Hazel and Augustus when they come to visit. This causes her to quit. |
